Sherwood writes about her travels through England, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France, and Scotland. Nearly every page includes inlaid ephemera: cartes-de-visite, dried plants, engravings excised from magazines, postage cancellations and stamps, newspaper clippings, and maps of Brussels, Vienna, Venice, Rome, Naples, and Milan. Sherwood describes her surroundings in great detail, and offers especially lengthy observations of the customs and culture of Germany.
